According to Global Workplace Analytics, nearly 68% of surveyed employees have been successfully working remotely, which could be the future of work. Then, we’ll discuss five best practices to maintain a healthy remote working environment. The problem is compounded by disparities in high-quality internet access throughout the country. And home broadband access is generally less prevalent in Black and Hispanic residences compared to white residences, according to a PEW Research Center survey. Households reporting lower levels of education and income are also similarly restricted in terms of quality internet access. No one’s internet connection is completely stable at every possible second.
Whether we’re speaking about employees or bosses, we are all social beings and can’t thrive without human interaction. Isolation is one of the top reasons for depression and lack of productivity. The friendly advice for employers and employees is to find a way to split the bill. Commuting usually takes lots of time, energy and money; especially if we take rush hour into consideration.
Fewer distractions
And even more, it costs money to buy food and coffee—necessities freely available in your kitchen at home. As a result, the dollar savings of working from home can be pretty substantial. The number of people working from home is constantly increasing worldwide, first and foremost in developed countries. But there is no doubt that the dynamics of the increasing popularity of remote work will grow globally with the development of internet accessibility. Adding a tool into your IT stack that tracks event logs across user profiles and devices is also a good idea for security purposes.
- I expect that various forms of hybrid environments—with some employees in the office and others operating remotely—will become the new norm.
- As someone who works remotely, you’ll also have more freedom and autonomy to do your job the way you want to.
- Work that requires more on-task concentration and problem-solving is done more preferably at home, with significantly fewer distractions [29,40].
- That creates opportunities for your company and its employee engagement strategies.
- The most common benefits include no commuting, reduced distraction, work–life balance and increased work flexibility, creativity, and motivation [28,29].
Therefore, we assumed that the perceived effectiveness of remote work was connected with the experienced benefits and limitations (cf. Hypothesis 1). Moreover, different management levels, i.e., middle- and lower-level managers, might perceive remote work differently (cf. Hypothesis 2). To evaluate the effectiveness of remote work, we recruited employees from one of the largest enterprises in Poland. The companies that provided data belong to one of Poland’s largest capital groups in the energy sector.
Remote Work – Advantages and Disadvantages
No longer connected with a physical office, many fully remote employees could keep their jobs and move closer to family, to a dream location, or to an area with a lower cost of living. (Maybe all three!) Just keep in mind that in some cases—like how companies benefit when employees work remotely employers that want you to attend in-person meetings once a week—changing locations may not be ideal. You should also make sure to check that your organization can legally employ someone based in the state or country you’re looking to move to.
With remote work, the employee can usually also have a more flexible schedule. They can adjust their work to their biological rhythm and level of energy during the day. Some companies even provide this option for all of their employees, and are
known as ”fully-remote workplaces”.
